The art of emojis totally changed everyone’s texting game. Now, instead of using words to describe feelings like frustration when your husband cancels date night, because he has to stay late at work, you can just send him a face with tears streaming down it. It’s a universal language, if you will — but not all countries use the same icons equally.
A new survey from Twitter data reveals the top emojis used in different places across the world. According to the study we South Africans use the both hands raised in celebration the most. This says a lot about our positive energy, seeing that countries like the US, UK and Canada got the weary face. We are not tired, we are ready to celebrate!
Meanwhile Turkey, Indonesia and the Philippines are almost bursting with happiness. Mexico and India are all about the praying hands. And Latin America proves they’re the most musically-minded, with Colombia, Brazil and Argentina preferring the music notes above the rest.
