Venetian blinds

Aspecialduster brush takes the elbow grease out of dusting slatted blinds. Try the Finishing Touches Mini Brush Blind Cleaner from Makro. Or put on cotton gloves, dampen them and run hands along both sides of slats. Soak metal blinds for an hour in a bath in a solution of detergent and water. Wipe bamboo blinds with a solution of dishwashing liquid and water, then dry with a soft cloth.

Roman  blinds

Brush with the upholstery tool of your vacuum cleaner on a low suction. Occasionally, clean them thoroughly by taking them down and removing the cords and dowels. These are sewn into the lining – unpick a bit of it. Hand-wash in warm water and detergent, rinse and hang up to dry.

Roller blinds

Vacuum with an upholstery tool. If spongeable, remove from brackets and clean with upholstery shampoo. Don’t make them too wet. Rehang while still damp. If the blind doesn’t wind back straight, re-tension by pulling down halfway, removing from brackets and rewinding by hand. Refit and pull down.

With these tips, cleaning blinds is no longer a conundrum.
