Valentine’s ideas for all the single ladies

The infamous ‘day of love’ doesn’t have to be a dark day if you are single or divorced.

In the weeks leading up to 14 February, shops are filled with red cards bursting with words of devotion and everlasting love, while oversized teddy bears are falling over one another asking you to be their ‘Valentine’. If all this falls on deaf ears for you because you’re part of the single-ladies club, how about a Valentine’s Day makeover? Here are five simple ways you can turn this day on its head and spread the love:

1. Round up your friends

Enjoy a mini break with some of your friends who also don’t need to spend it with anyone else. Take a drive to a wine farm and sip on your favourite red or white, or if you prefer to stay closer to home, go to a restaurant or host a dinner party for friends. Use this time to acknowledge how much love you have in your life and thank your friends for the important roles they play.

2. Treat yourself

Whether it’s a spa day or a shopping spree, you deserve to be a priority in your life. Book an appointment at that spa you’ve been eyeing out and line up a selection of treatments that’ll leave you feeling refreshed. Or go into that shop you normally walk past and take that gorgeous dress off the hanger and feel beautiful while wearing it. Whatever it may be, you deserve to feel celebrated and loved, and why shouldn’t you be the one to make you feel that way?

3. Do something you’ve never done before

You know that one thing you’ve always thought of doing, but always put off for another day? Always thought of going bungee jumping? Want to jump out of a plane? Or take it slower and join a yoga class or running group? Take the plunge and do something that surprises you.

4. Whisk yourself away

If you don’t fancy anyone else’s company and just want to get away from it all, then a last-minute holiday to Mauritius or Thailand might be just what you need. Let go of the stigma that’s attached to travelling alone or applying your own sunscreen – time unplugged from everyday stresses and technology is just what the doctor ordered. Fall in love with a new city or a foreign dish and come back rejuvenated.

5. Enjoy a night in

If all you want to do on Valentine’s Day is dig into the biggest possible pizza while watching your favourite rom-com in your comfiest jammies, then go for it! This day is yours to love and to do as you please – no problem in loving the gorgeous star on the screen.
