You might know it better as retinol, which is a derivative of of vitamin A, and it’s effective in treating a multitude of skincare concerns, making it the Holy Grail ingredient for many of its devotees.
What does it treat?
Because of retinol’s ability to regenerate the skin’s surface by encouraging cell turnover, it is something that can treat all sorts of skin issues. The most common usage is to combat the signs of ageing by preventing fine lines and wrinkles from developing or worsening. Another problem it is great at treating – and one that is a big problem for many South African women – is dark marks and pigmentation, and this is because of the increased cell-turnover rate when using it. Vitamin A is also quite drying, which means that it’s also effective in the treatment of acne. It really is an all-rounder!

When should you start using it?
This has been the topic of much debate in the skincare industry for the last few decades, but it seems the pros have finally come to a consensus. They say that by our mid-20s we should be using a product containing vitamin A, even if it’s just the minimum amount, regularly, and with that we should also be using SPF daily. Retinoids make the skin more sensitive to UV rays, which means that sunscreen is even MORE important after you start using it.
If you missed the memo and are well out of your 20s, it’s not too late for you. It just means that you need to race to the shops to get your vitamin A fix – stat! Better, brighter skin is just one ingredient away.
